Independently Checked Mark Overview

The SGS Independently Checked Mark is a Product Approval Mark for non-food consumer products that offers clarity that a product has passed independent, third-party testing.

This is a voluntary program, meaning a program that the manufacturer or retailer will implement in addition to verifying compliance with the current mandatory regulations for a given market. This program is built on a foundation of testing protocols that reflect the current mandatory regulations applicable to the product for the market where the manufacturer or retailer has declared the product will be sold. In addition to meeting the mandatory regulations it allows a manufacturer or retailer to choose to have their products tested against one or more of the program’s seven voluntary performance related criteria:

  • Quality
  • Performance
  • Durability
  • Functionality
  • Usability
  • Workmanship
  • Preferred material

Products are randomly sampled by SGS from production for the initial testing and from either production or point of sale for the monitoring or surveillance testing of the product. SGS Independently Checked Mark Approval is awarded only after the product has been initially tested in an SGS laboratory and demonstrated that it meets regulatory requirements plus the selected performance related criteria and it is valid for one year.

It is a requirement of the program that during the one year validity of the approval the product undergoes repeat testing (surveillance) to ensure it continues to meet the regulatory requirements and the agreed performance related criteria, so it can continue to carry the SGS Independently Checked mark during that year.

The dates and results of the tests conducted are displayed within the Independently Checked Mark Directory, along with other product related information. The test results provided are those from the time of initial testing and/or surveillance testing, as indicated in the Independently Checked Mark Directory, and are indicative to products of the same production batch number.
